Image Woman sentenced to death for participating in peaceful demonstrations       

Iran National TV – August 18, 2010: One of the political prisoners arrested during the Ashura day protests on December 27, 2009 in Iran has been sentenced to the inhumane punishment by hanging. Political prisoner Farah (Elmira) Vazehan has also been sentenced to two years in prison and payment of monetary fines. Ms. Vazehan’s family and her lawyer have reportedly protested the ruling.

Laleh Hassanpour Arraigned on New Charges in Evin Prison PDF Print E-mail

HRANA-  Human rights activist Laleh Hassanpour was summoned by the 3rd Circuit of the
Revolutionary Court
located in Evin Prison on August 18, 2010. According to HRANA reporters, she was arraigned in court on three new charges without having her lawyer present. Laleh Hassanpour was charged with “insulting the supreme leader”, “insulting the sanctity of Islam”, and “insulting the president”.

Los Angeles Times - The execution of Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani is on hold. But until Iran ends the practice of stoning and insists on equal justice for women, it will not be rid of international censure.

Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani may not have long to live. International outrage over Iran's plan to stone to death the 43-year-old mother of two appears to have dissuaded it from going forward with that particular barbarity. But Ashtiani is not free. Her case is now under review by Iran's Supreme Court, and a final verdict could come as soon as next week. A state-run television news program, however, announced that she would not be executed during the month of Ramadan, which ends Sept. 9, and that instead of being stoned, she is to hang.

SHAHRZAD NEWS -Following unverified reports about the possibility of a death sentence for Zahra Bahrami, an Iranian-Dutch citizen arrested in Iran following the Ashura uprising (December 27, 2009), Amnesty International and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands have expressed concern. Amnesty International has reported that Zahra Bahrami’s case is being investigated by its head office in London. Zahra Bahrami is a citizen of the Netherlands and she traveled to Iran to visit her family.
