Poem: Let the Heavens Tremble

onlywhenwomensingLet the Heavens Tremble*

A poem by Carole R. Fontaine from her book, Only When Women Sing: Poems on Human Rights

Let the heavens tremble

When women raise their voice

Let the heavens tremble

When people make their choice

Let the heavens tremble

When people speak their truth

Let the heavens tremble

At the flare of hope in youth

Let the heavens tremble

When courts do what is right

Let the heavens tremble:

We see the end in sight.

Let the heavens tremble:

In the darkness, we see light!

*The ruling theocracy in Iran claims that the heavens tremble (with horror) when women dare to ask for divorce. Maryam Rajavi, the president-elect of the National Council of Resistance in Iran, says “Let them tremble!”
